Mobile Lab Services

One of the most powerful investigation techniques made possible with MicroWells is achieved by combining the immediate sampling capability of the wells with on-site gas chromatography. This allows the results from one well to help guide the installation of additional wells. Alternatively, by sampling a well at sequential depths and obtaining a profile of ground water conditions, permanent monitoring screens can be set at optimum depths. P&S's mobile lab is equipped with lab grade Hewlett Packard Model 5890 and Photovac GCs with computerized data management for a full range of analytic capabilities. Experience indicates that cost savings are maximized when well installations are combined with on-site analysis.

With the use of our GIS and 3D mapping capabilities, field data can be combined for analysis and visualization of project components such as water table contours, contaminant concentrations, plume delineation and more.

Field Analysis Programs Include:

• Hydrocarbons, BTEX, chlorinated solvents, EDB and other halogenated compounds
• Gasoline and diesel range organics
• Pesticides and PCBs
• Collected data can be used in GIS mapping of site conditions

Advantages:

• Detection limits below MCLs for most analytes
• Immediate reliable results
• Over 17 years of field analysis expertise
• Cost savings

Profile Project
Revere Landing Park
Location: Charlestown, MA
Services: Environmental Site Investigation and Remedial Design; Soils and Horticulture Investigation

The MDC planned to construct a new park area on land adjacent to the Charles River Dam in Charlestown, MA. P&S's site investigation revealed the presence of contaminants in the soils and in ground water. It also revealed serious drainage and horticultural problems at the site due to urban soil fill conditions. P&S carried out Phase I and Phase II environmental investigations as well as remediation design for contaminated soil conditions. P&S also provided recommendations for planting bed design, subsurface drainage, and management of soil.

Representative Environmental Consulting Projects

Commercial Property, Acton, MA
Performed a 21E Assessment, Preliminary Assessment and phased field sampling investigations for a 60-acre site contaminated by a leaking underground tank and prior waste oil disposal practices. Designed low cost clean-up and remediation plan that produced results below action levels in a very short period of time and led to a Waiver of Approvals by DEP.

Contaminant Source Investigation, Water Supply District, Acton, MA
Conducted hydrogeological study that traced contaminants of three municipal water supply wells along a 25 to 30 year flow path back to the probable source areas at a Superfund Site. Work was instrumental in the settlement of a 3.2 million dollar lawsuit for treatment of the ground water supply sources.

Technical Advisor to Citizens Groups Monitoring Superfund Site Investigations, Woburn and Acton, MA
Recipient of three EPA technical assistance grants for professional assistance to citizens' groups overseeing characterization and remediation of extensive sites contaminated by a wide range of waste materials and sludge at three major Superfund sites.

Former Farm Property, North Reading, MA
Investigation of soil and ground water conditions on a 44-acre parcel of land on the banks of the Ipswich River which was proposed for residential and recreational development. Based upon a historical, municipal and state file review, P&S investigated surficial soil conditions for levels of pesticide use. Subsurface investigation s of soil and groundwater quality were also conducted to assess impact of known episodes of dumping on the property.

New Hampshire DES Division of Water Supply and Pollution Control
On-site chemical reconnaissance using soil gas and MicroWell technology along with on-site analysis for rapid assessment of contaminant conditions at several sites under investigation by the state. P&S has been able to quickly assess the extent and level of contamination of plumes at sites under investigation by the state.

Gasoline Station Assessments, Long Island, NY
Installation of MicroWells and on-site GC analyses of ground water samples to delineate plumes of gasoline at over 30 sites, some threatening public water supplies

Property Purchase, Littleton, MA
Site assessment of a former farm property, including sampling and analysis of surficial and subsurface soils and ground water. Developed plan and supervised removal of contaminated soils resulting in a Waiver of Approvals by DEP for clean up actions.

National Park Site, Wellfleet, MA
Ground water study at sensitive pond-side locations accessed by means of a boat to avoid damage to a sensitive environment. Installations by P&S's non-motorized K202 rig of MicroWells in clusters for use as piezometers to study ground water flow conditions and long term water quality.

Massachusetts DEP SARRS II Subcontractor, Various Massachusetts Sites
Perform subsurface and mobile laboratory investigations to delineate volatile organic contaminants in soil atmosphere, soil and ground water at sites under investigation by DEP. Investigations have ranged from gasoline station site assessments to ground water studies of threats to municipal water supply wells.

Industrial Property, NH
Installed conventional monitoring wells and MicroWells to assess the horizontal and vertical reach of extensive ground water and soil contamination caused by long term disposal of VOC. With New Hampshire DES approval, P&S set up a ground water remediation system as well as a Vapor Extraction System involving MicroWells screened in the vadose zone. Pilot testing of the treatment system showed that all VOC levels in the water prior to discharge were below EPA discharge standards.

Investigation of Threat to Municipal Well, Barnstable, MA
Confirmation of industrial disposal area as source of a narrow plume of contamination that extended over a distance of 2,400 feet using MicroWells and on-site GC analysis. P&S advanced MicroWell technology capabilities in order to rapidly penetrate deposits of cobbles and reach depths to 70 feet BGS.
